Meet Hilary, a 2WG ambassador commuting in Elmira, Ontario since 2007. Hilary's advice for new commuters, "Get a comfortable bike, and keep it well-maintained. If it doesn't feel good to ride, you won't do it."

Is your city commuter-friendly?

Yes

Why did you decide to start commuting?

I went to university in Montreal, where few people (especially students) have cars. I started biking because it seemed like the best way to get around. Turns out it was and remains that way!

What is your most important piece of gear?

Lights, and right now I'm riding with my 2WG commute backpack placed in a front basket and it has been dreamy for constant on/off bike errands.

What is your favourite aspect of daily riding?

Running into friends on their commutes. Being able to notice small changes in my environment throughout the seasons. Getting fresh air every day.

What is the worst part of commuting?

Steep uphill at the end of the day.

What is the coolest thing you've ever seen while on your bike?

The California redwoods.

Do you have any commuting hacks to share?

Get racks! Let your bike carry your stuff for you.

Have you ever been in an accident while riding? What happened?

I wasn't paying attention and hit the side mirror of a parked car with my handlebar so my handlebars cranked sideways and I threw myself over the front tire and knocked two of my teeth out.

What is your stance on wearing a helmet? What are the laws like in your area?

There's a helmet law but it is not regularly enforced. I rarely wear mine.

Did the COVID-19 pandemic affect your ride?

Yes! I work from home now, so I don't actually commute anymore. I now ride for errands, getting around the city socially, and fun.
