Inside the Environmentally Sustainable Ethos of Two Wheel Gear
As biking and nature enthusiasts, protecting the environment has always been high on our priority list. Continuing to do all we can to limit the damage caused by manufacturing is central to Two Wheel Gear’s company ethos.
We recognize that making and delivering products has an impact on the environment and health of our planet. At the same time, our aim is to enable people to use their bicycles more and cars, trucks or other motorized vehicles less. Our entire product line is focused on promoting cycling, walking and mass transit as practical modes of transportation.
As we enter into a new year, it’s more important for us than ever that we ramp up our efforts to limit our impact on the environment. Here are some of the actions we’re taking to demonstrate our continued commitment to sustainability and protecting our planet’s future.
Using Bluesign® approved Materials & Manufacturing
Bluesign® approval is given to products that have been manufactured with responsible use of resources and the lowest possible impact on people and the environment. At Two Wheel Gear, we already work to use recycled and/or natural materials as much as possible to create sustainable products. By the end of 2022, we will be using all Bluesign® approved suppliers for our fabrics, and it's our aim to make 100% of our bags from recycled or natural fabrics by 2025.
During the manufacturing process, we restrict the use of damaging substances, including PVC, PTFE, PFAS and BPA, as well as heavy metals like Lead, Cadmium, Chromium VI and Nickel Release.
Ensuring our Packaging is Recyclable and Compostable
When you buy a Two Wheel Gear product, you can be assured that the attached hang-tag and header cards are made with recycled content, while the poly-bags that the products arrive in are all compostable.
Shipping Options
One of the biggest downsides to manufacturing is the negative impact product delivery has on the environment, and how much this contributes to a brand’s carbon footprint.
We try to use ocean shipping as much as possible to mitigate the environmental damage of product delivery. We offset the carbon footprint (where possible) in our direct shipments to customers. We also consolidate our shipments to as few vessels as possible.
End of Life
When we design and manufacture our bags, we do so with longevity in mind. Two Wheel Gear products are meant to have a very long life, and it’s our hope that they are used for years - if not decades!
The reality is that all products eventually wear out, but we try to breathe life into older bags where we can. In order to reduce waste, we work with our vendors and customers to repair broken parts as much as possible without scrapping entire bags.
Instead of promoting Black Friday every year, we also opt for ‘Green Friday’ sales, where we offer gently used, inspected gear at a 50% discount price. In addition, we offer discount codes to customers whose old bags have reached the end of their life. Two Wheel Gear then has the ability to deconstruct the products and recycle or re-use any materials possible.
We’re always thinking of new ways to innovate and keep Two Wheel Gear as environmentally friendly a business as possible.
